A half day sightseeing tour to
Kutna Hora, the medieval silver mining town to the east of Prague. Kutná Hora is now designated a world heritage site, protected by UNESCO.
After picking you up from your Prague accommodation, we drive for around one hour to reach Kutná Hora. During the Middle Ages, the huge deposits of silver uncovered here led to Kutná Hora becoming the most important city in the Kingdom of Bohemia after Prague.
The wealth and prosperity that flowed from the silver mines in Kutná Hora, led to rich architectural development. Beautiful churches such as St. Barbara's Cathedral, and elegant palaces like the Italian Court sprang up. The Italian Court was used as the Royal Mint.
Around the 15th century, impressive burgher houses were also constructed, along with other Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque buildings. Many still survive to this day.
Our guided sightseeing tour to Kutna Hora leads us through the ancient city streets, and includes entrances to the most important buildings. There is also some free time to browse the shops and take refreshments.
Once our tour of Kutna Hora is complete, we move on to the small, nearby village of Sedlec, where we visit one of the most interesting burial places in the world, Kostnice (Bone Church). The chapel is decorated with more than 40,000 human bones, including a chandelier and a crest of the noble family Schwarzenberg.
Kutná Hora has been registered as a UNESCO world heritage site since 1995.
